About Lightful

Lightful ranked number 1 for Social Media Management platforms built for non-profits.

At Lightful, we believe that those doing the greatest good deserve the best technology.

We’re passionate about making the best technology accessible to charities and non-profits. Our products and custom solutions help organisations unleash the power of technology and make the good work they do even greater.

There are over 55 of us at the moment and we’re growing pretty quickly! We’ve worked with great organisations large and small, such as the likes of Help Refugees, London’s Air Ambulance, Comic Relief and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to name a few.

We are building a platform designed to help charities and other good causes make the most of social media. We know that they struggle to find the time or the resources to use social media effectively to raise more support, awareness and funds for their cause.

The platform currently helps users from small and medium sized charities alongside other non-profits plan their social posts, collaborate with their colleagues and learn from what’s working. This builds their confidence and competence using digital tools to achieve their strategic objectives, improve their digital fundraising, raise their digital profile and achieving their campaign goals

However, our vision goes much bigger than that. We want to build a product that will revolutionise the way in which charities do digital.

  • We believe people should get more from doing good
    • We want people to feel more joy supporting the causes they care about
  • We believe strong relationships are key
    • We want to make relationships between good people and great causes and more meaningful

The Role

The Director of Engineering is the most senior engineering role on the Platform, the software-as-a-service side of the business at Lightful. Reporting directly to the CEO, you’ll be joining the team at an exciting time, when the engineering capacity is scaling out, second and third teams are being created and engineers are being embedded in teams where necessary. There are currently 9 engineers working on the Lightful Platform. The ambition is to bring this total to over 20 by the end of 2020.

You should be passionate about technical excellence whilst holding a clear vision of how to make engineering teams function to the best of their capabilities. It will be particularly important to help a group of teams cohere and ship the right things at the right time in a cross-functional and product driven context. It is important that you have a deep understanding of agile processes and how to adapt, fix and improve them. You’ll be working closely with the Director of Product, other members of the Lightful leadership team, as well as with the C-suite on technology strategy. You will have direct reports of the most senior full-stack engineers responsible across the front-end, backend and QA.

As Director of Engineering, you’d be part of Lightful’s Extended Leadership Team, where you’d be expected to represent engineering as a discipline and provide advice across work streams, including periodically liaising with the Lightful Services consultancy arm of the company. You should be willing and able to get hands-on and bridge any engineering gaps from time to time. You’ll also be a keen advocate for representing the company at tech industry and charitable events to raise Lightful’s profile as a place of technical and ethical excellence, be it at conferences, industry events or with investors and other stakeholders.

We pride ourselves on being vibrant, trusting and a team working on a platform to improve
charities’ skills at social media management. A high degree of empathy with end-user needs – those of small and medium-sized charities, beyond profits and organisations across the third sector - is at the centre of the work we do, so we’re looking for someone who is motivated by making a product which will make a major difference to these users.

Technically, we work across a modern JavaScript stack. On the client side, React is our framework of choice. For our backend we utilise AWS Lambda to execute micro-services including our central GraphQL API and use PostgreSQL, SNS and DynamoDB. We are moving to TypeScript, having managed types with Facebook’s Flow up until now. We are an open-minded team and enjoy introducing new tools and ways of working - taking a strategic view on these choices will be part of the role. Leadership should be balanced with listening and bringing people with you, rather than imposing the latest trends just because.

Diversity is really important to us, both as a tech company and by driving to social and environmental impact. We welcome applications from candidates from all backgrounds.
